The Philippines’ environment minister has stated that Nickelodeon will not be allowed to build an underwater theme park in Palawan, a region in the country that is home to two UNESCO world heritage-listed sites.

The US television network had announced on Monday that a 400-hectare project to develop an underwater theme park, causing uproar from local communities and environmentalists in the Philippines.

According to The Guardian, Gina Lopez, the environment secretary, said in an interview: “That’s our wealth. It’s not allowed. You can’t kill the corals. For a theme park? No. No way, man.”

“The commitment of the government is first and foremost and always, always to the benefit of our people.”

This hard-hitting no from the environment minister is also supported by online campaigners that have reached 125,000 signatures in 24 hours.
