Popular fast food chain, McDonald’s will put a stop to the use of plastic straws in its outlets in the UK.
The decision by the US fast-food chain to switch from plastic to paper straws follow the Sum of Us petition which warned that plastic straws have been polluting the oceans, harming marine life, and called on McDonald’s to make a change.
McDonald’s which uses about 1.8m straws a day in the UK said it will completely put an end to plastic straws by 2019. The switch will affect McDonald’s 1,361 outlets in the UK but there are still 36,000 restaurants worldwide that will keep using plastic straws, The Guardian reported.
“Reflecting the broader public debate, our customers told us they wanted to see a move on straws but to do so without compromising their overall experience when visiting our restaurants,” said Paul Pomroy, chief executive of McDonald’s UK and Ireland.
