Senegal’s COVID-19 testing kits could save millions of lives

These rapid testing kits work like pregnancy kits and can tell the result in 10 minutes.

The west African nation is doing what most countries can’t. They are testing everyone for coronavirus, whether they have symptoms or not, and they have no shortage of testing kits.

Researchers at the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, in partnership with the British biotechnology company Mologic, are developing a $1 quick testing kit that works like a pregnancy kit and will tell you the result in 10 minutes.

Originally made to test for dengue fever, patients have to drop their blood or saliva onto the device and it will show whether they are positive or negative for the novel coronavirus.

“There is no need for a highly equipped lab, it is a simple test that can be done anywhere. The idea is to rapidly produce 2-4 million kits, not just for us, but for all African countries, so that we can detect and isolate patients quickly,” says Amadou Sall, the administrator general of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar
