US vows to slash carbon emissions by half by 2030

US President Biden has called upon the world to come together and “overcome the existential crisis of our time”.

At a virtual climate summit on Earth Day, US President Joe Biden unveiled a new pledge to cut the nation’s emissions by between 50% and 52% by the end of the decade.

Biden warned that “time is short” to address the dangerous levels of global heating and urged the rest of the world to raise their ambitions and do more.

Prior to the summit, the White House declared its ambitious new goal which will set it on the path to net zero emissions by 2050.

“Particularly those of us that represent the world’s largest economies, we have to step up,” the US President said in his opening speech at the summit.

“Let’s run that race, win a more sustainable future than we have now, overcome the existential crisis of our time.”
