Red Light Therapy Helps Low Back Pain

Treating low back pain (LBP) is more effective with 808nm and 905nm wavelengths in Red Light Therapy– recent studies state. This is the range of Near-Infrared Light. It uses the longest spectrum to penetrate deep into the bottom layers of your skin around the lumber region.

As Red Light Therapy reaches the affected areas, the longer wavelengths positively alter biological activity within the cells and tissues. The process fuels the production of good cells, the repairing of the bad cells, and the flow of blood vessels. Consequently, it heals the damaged tissue, alleviates the pain, and provides relief from chronic low back pain.

The session varies based on the intensity and causes of the issue. However, red light therapy can help relieve your pain given that you use it about 3 to 5 times a week for 10 to 20 minutes. A survey found a visible reduction in LBP within 7 weeks after the end of the course. (Source: NCBI)

Moreover, another survey revealed that the therapy did not show any side effects after using the devices on LBP patients. (Source: Pubmed)

Because of its proven efficiency and free of side effects, experts and sufferers resort to Red Light Therapy and move ahead from traditional treatments. The devices bear the shorter wavelengths (R+) and longer wavelengths (NIR+), although, the latter works better to aid in healing LBP.

Speaking of which, low back pain is one of the major public health issues. It is one of the musculoskeletal disorders of your spine. As per the World Health Organization, around 619 million people are LBP victims. Researchers further say that it can increase to 843 million cases by 2050. (Source:WHO)

Several causes can make you suffer from chronic lower back pain. The issue can originate from spinal disorders, muscle tears, ankylosing spondylitis, bone breaks, and connective tissue problems like tendinitis. Hence, Red Light Therapy works differently for each.

There are Four Common Ways Red Light Treats Low Back Pain.

RLT Repairs Strained/Torn Muscles: The single most common cause of LBP is strained or torn muscles. When you overuse or injure your muscles, it ends in lower back pain. This can originate from poor posture, sudden movements, and heavy lifting.

The NIR+ wavelengths of Red Light work to increase and regulate collagen production. The collagen is a primary component of connective tissue, including intervertebral discs. As the wavelengths reach the affected areas, it helps cushion your vertebrae, reduce inflammation, and accelerate the repair of damaged connective tissue. In consequence, it assists in lowering pain in your lower back.

RLT Fixes Spinal Disc Issues: Because of injury or age, the gel can bulge out of your spinal discs. As a result, it presses on your nerve and causes chronic lower back pain.

Red Light Therapy targets the damaged spinal discs for circulating blood with its longer wavelengths. It enhances cellular repair processes around the areas and increases the oxygen and nutrient supply to the discs. This way, it promotes the regeneration of damaged disc tissues and the production of fresh, healthy tissue. As a result, the process assists in alleviating pain and improving spine health overall.

RLT Helps Heal Ankylosing Spondylitis: A chronic inflammatory disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) happens because of genes and age. It affects the spine and sacroiliac joints and causes inflammation around the vertebrae. This results in the weakening of your spine, reduction in flexibility, and chronic lower back pain.

Red Light Therapy works to manage AS as it penetrates deep into the tissue, accelerates cellular energy production, and increases blow flow, and nutrient delivery. This helps reduce lower back pain and improve joint function and flexibility.

RLT Repairs Nerve Damage: Because of pressure on your spinal nerves from bone spurs or herniated discs, you may experience nerve damage in the lower back. The issue ends in sciatica or nerve compression and causes nerve pain and lower back pain.

Red Light Therapy uses its longer wavelengths to reach inflamed nerves. It boosts cellular repair mechanisms that work to reduce inflammation around the nervous system. Consequently, it promotes nerve regeneration and improves nerve function which helps reduce chronic lower back pain.

Because studies suggest the use of a longer NIR light spectrum for treating low back pain, most devices incorporate lights with wavelengths up to 850nm. Among several devices, BIOMAX 900 has been found to offer better benefits. It has four NIR wavelengths i.e. 810nm, 830nm, 850nm, and 1060nm which help alleviate chronic low back pain.
